The iOS version of Bejeweled 2 (also known as Bejeweled 2 + Blitz) is a port of Bejeweled 2 for Apple's iOS mobile platform. It was released for iPhone and iPod Touch on July 11, 2008[1] on the App Store.

This port includes three Bejeweled 2 game modes and Blitz mode, based on Bejeweled Blitz, bundled in one package. Blitz game mode was removed in later versions and replaced with a separate Bejeweled Blitz app. The game was delisted from the App Store in September 2015.[2] The game can only run on devices with iOS 10 or earlier due to Apple removing support for all 32-bit apps on later iOS versions.

Overview

Bejeweled 2 for iOS is a scaled down version of Bejeweled 2, featuring only 3 game modes from the original game: Classic, Action and Endless. The backgrounds in this game follow a different order, and reset to the first background every time a saved game is resumed. The game can be played in Portrait or Landscape screen rotation. Unlike the original game, Endless progress can be reset with New Game appearing on the Continue game screen. The game only features 2 songs: Beyond the Network and The Journey Begins. However, when music is played from an external app, the in-game music is automatically muted.

Phoenix Prism as seen in the game.

The iOS version of Bejeweled 2 also features a port of Bejeweled Blitz with Facebook intergration. Blitz incorporates Star Gem, Boosts, Rare Gems and Coins from the original game. All the boosts are the same as the PC and Flash version, with the prices being based on the Flash version. The rare gems included were Moonstone, Phoenix Prism and more. Boosts and Rare Gems are unlocked only when you are signed in Facebook.

History

Bejeweled 2 for iOS was released on July 10, 2008, with version 1.0. It launched with only two game modes: Classic and Action.

Version 1.1 (released April 18, 2009[1]) adds Endless game mode. Several changes to the UI are made, such as the addition of screen orientation play-styles - Portrait and Landscape, and a "More Games" section, promoting other PopCap games.

Version 1.2 (released November 11, 2009[1]) adds the Blitz mode, a game mode based on Bejeweled Blitz. It introduced new features unique to this mode, such as Facebook Interoperability to connect to your Facebook account and load all your stats and friends, the Star Gem (which uses the Lightning Gem sound effect), the score-breaking multiplier, the multiswapping mechanic, and Blazing Speed. The version also includes some UI changes.

Version 1.3 (released on August 3, 2010[1]) saw some changes to the speed engine in Blitz, in addition to bug fixes. Gems now fall accordingly to the speed meter indicated on the upper left section of the UI. They no longer keep the somewhat consecutive speed Blitz 1.2 had, making it more relatable to its' online and PC counterparts. Other than some engine changes, this update also brought in the addition of Boosts. They also somewhat revamped the UI, adding an EULA button that redirects to a PopCap site (which has now been deprecated) and added a black translucent background when you pause. All in the same time the boosts came around, Coins were added into the toss so the boosts could be paid for. Boosts can only be accessed via Facebook Interoperability, thus making them unavailable offline. Scores can also only be viewed after a game of Blitz when connected to the internet. v1.3 also has some weird graphical glitch in which the number that appears after a gem has been matched is off-position from where the match had been made. This only occurs in all gamemodes except Blitz.

Version 1.4 & 1.5 (Covering v1.4 & v1.5.3: Estimated Release on 1.4 is somewhere in early 2011 and 1.5.3 on July 7, 2011) introduced a slew of interface changes and a few new features: Blitz's UI had been completely revamped changed the UI in Blitz, making it much more relatable in terms of appearance to the online/PC counterparts. The 1.5.3 patch added Rare Gems, which are power-up that only make an appearance every so-often. The Rare Gem's ability can vary from 3 different types that were available: Phoenix's Prism, Cat's Eye and Moonstone. All of these gems work similarly to their PC counterparts and only varied in appearance. Boosts can now be auto-renewed. Coins were made purchasable via the app store. The mode has also completely deprecated the 2 backgrounds with its own backgrounds, with the exception of one background, which comes from its online counterpart, although multipliers do not affect the background. The restart button also no longer leads to a new board, but instead to the boost selecting screen. This allows you to reconsider your decisions in playing without anything and gives you a chance to put some type of variety in your refreshed game.

On December 2011, PopCap quietly delisted the game from the App Store, with the new iOS version of Bejeweled later known as Bejeweled Classic and a seperate Bejeweled Blitz app replacing it.[2] In future in-game updates, the Blitz mode would be disabled entirely, with an advertisement button to get the newer Bejeweled Blitz app taking its place instead.
